The Two B’s of Caring Relationships

Showing care strengthens relationships. As encouragers, our goal is to demonstrate genuine care through our words, actions, and consistency. But healthy relationships also require two important things: Boundaries and Balance—the Two B’s.

Boundaries create healthy space. They allow us to support others without creating unhealthy dependence. Balance keeps a relationship mutually supportive rather than one-sided. Together, boundaries and balance protect the relationship while giving it room to grow.

Care is also demonstrated by honoring our word and following through on commitments. Small, intentional actions can communicate that someone matters:

  • Call just to check in.

  • Send a “thinking about you” text or note.

  • Grab a coffee and catch up.

  • Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other milestones.

  • Give someone your undivided attention.

Sometimes the smallest gesture can make the greatest impact. I have experienced this when someone comes to mind and I take a moment to reach out. More than once, the response has been, “I was just thinking about you,” or “I was going to call you.” Those moments remind me to pay attention to those gentle promptings to encourage someone.

Building meaningful relationships takes time, consistency, and intentionality. When we show genuine care while honoring Boundaries and Balance, we create healthy relationships where both people can grow, flourish, and encourage one another.

Sometimes, strengthening a relationship begins with something as simple as showing someone you care.
